7.45pm One of Giacomo Puccini's greatest operas,Tosca is a roller-coaster story of love, lust, murder and political intrigue.
With its dramatic storyline and Puccini’s richly romantic score, it is one
of the world’s best loved operas.
This concert performance will be sung in Italian by Nevill Holt Opera,
with its orchestra and chorus. The company’s previous productions at
Proms in the last three years have all sold out.
Under artistic director Nicholas Chalmers, who conducts tonight,
Nevill Holt continues to reinforce its national reputation. Nicholas is
conductor of Northern Ireland Opera and artistic director of Second
Movement Opera Company.

Tosca is played by Belfast-born soprano Giselle Allen, acknowledged
as a singing actress of the first order, who has appeared at opera
houses throughout the world.

Spanish tenor Carlos Fidalgo plays Cavaradossi. Born in León, he
studied in Europe before moving to London to study at the National
Opera Studio. He has sung with UK companies including English
National Opera and Scottish Opera, and across Europe.
Welsh baritone Paul Carey Jones sings Scarpia. He trained at the
Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio. Joint winner
of the 2013 Wagner Society Singing Competition, he sang with
Scottish Opera and Northern Ireland Opera before making his Royal
Opera debut last year. 'His unwaveringly steady, oaky baritone anchored the production' Opera Magazine.

7.45pm The Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra performs Beethoven’s
Triple Concerto and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, with Robert Max
(director/cello), Sophie Lockett (violin) and Zoë Solomon (piano).
One of Beethoven’s less well-known works, this amiable concerto,
for piano, violin, cello and orchestra, is followed by Berlioz’s tale of an
artist and his unrequited love. With its dramatic themes of longing and
despair, this was, in 1830, a ground-breaking piece of programme
music and orchestration.
The Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra has long been part of the
musical life of London, working with different conductors and artists
at venues and festivals across the city and the South East.
Robert Max, soloist, conductor and recording artist, is principal cellist
of the London Chamber Orchestra and cellist of the acclaimed
Barbican Piano Trio.
Sophie Lockett appears regularly with the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Hallé. She has performed
with artists including Frank Ocean, McFly, Alison Moyet and
John Barrowman.
Zoë Solomon’s qualities as a chamber musician and accompanist have
made her in demand at concerts in both Europe and the USA.

This year, under the heading HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB GARDENS, nine of the Suburb's finest gardens and one allotment are opening on one day as a group featured in the National Gardens Scheme yellow 'Gardens to Visit' book, in which garden owners raise funds for nursing, cancer and other worthwhile national charities. Tickets with maps £8.50pp (children free) available from 86 Willifield Way and 1 Asmuns Hill on the day only. Refreshments at Fellowship House, where two well-known nurseries will be selling a fantastic selection of plants. Plants will also be available in some of the gardens. Children's Treasure Hunt, Raffle with amazing prizes. Dan Haynes and Pete Richards perform an unforgettable show,
celebrating the music of Simon & Garfunkel. Naming their group
Bookends after the folk-rock duo’s album title, Dan and Pete recreate
their ever-fresh songs. They are backed by Leos Strings, which was
founded in 2008 by cellist Rachel Shakespeare at the Royal Northern
College of Music.
Bookends tour extensively at prestigious venues, including the
Edinburgh Festival Theatre and The Lowry, and enjoyed sell-out runs
at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The concert features classics such as The Sound of Silence,
Mrs Robinson, Bridge Over Troubled Water and such lesser-known

7.45pm One of the world’s finest clarinettists, Michael Collins is joined by
fellow recording artist pianist Michael McHale and renowned soprano
Grace Davidson in a programme comprising Schubert’s The Shepherd
on the Rock, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and Schubert’s Octet.
The Shepherd on the Rock is a showpiece for clarinet, voice and piano,
which conveys the shepherd’s longings for his absent sweetheart. This
is followed by one of Mozart’s most sublime works, the Clarinet
Quintet. We finish with Schubert’s Octet, an infectiously joyous piece
of music that never fails to raise the spirit.
Today, also highly regarded as a conductor, Michael Collins continues his
distinguished soloist career as a clarinettist. Committed to expanding the
repertoire of the instrument, he has premièred works by contemporary
composers. Recent releases include a disc of British Clarinet Concertos
as soloist and conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Grace Davidson has carved an international career working with all the

7.45pm The renowned Chilingirian Quartet, with pianist Andrew Brownell,
perform Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor, one of the masterpieces of
chamber music. They are then joined by mezzo-soprano Sarah Pring in
the world première of the song cycle "Letters from Lony" by Ronald Corp,
commissioned by Proms at St Jude’s.
"Letters from Lony" is a voice from the Holocaust. Lony Rabl-Fraenkel sent
the letters from Nazi-occupied Amsterdam to her new-born grandson
in England before she perished in Auschwitz without ever seeing him.
The Chilingirian Quartet, founded in 1971, is one of the world’s most
celebrated and widely travelled ensembles and has built up an extensive
and critically acclaimed discography of classical and romantic works.
Composer and conductor Ronald Corp has composed many works,
including cantatas, a symphony, piano concertos and more than 100 songs.
Sarah Pring, a favourite at Glyndebourne, where she began her career,
has sung at the Royal Opera House and with companies including
English National Opera, Welsh National Opera and Scottish Opera.
Andrew Brownell has won prizes at major European competitions and
has been soloist with orchestras such as the Hallé, Royal Liverpool

Orchestra of St Paul’s. Tonight’s screenings feature Chaplin’s The Cure,

Davis’s hilarious and touching scores live to the screen.
Ben Palmer has conducted, among others, the Royal Philharmonic Concert

7.45pm The highlight of this programme by one of the world’s best known
choral ensembles is Fauré’s celebrated Requiem. The Choir will also be
performing works by Duruflé, Tomkins, Byrd, Bach, Brahms and Bruckner.
With origins dating back nearly 700 years, the choir’s fame expanded
internationally in the 20th century with an extensive recording
catalogue and the Christmas Eve Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
broadcast to millions round the world. Choirmaster and organist
Stephen Cleobury has been Director of Music since 1982.
