Proms at St Jude's - Michael Collins & Friends, with Grace Davidson

  • Tuesday 27 June 2017
at St. Jude's Church .
7.45pm One of the world’s finest clarinettists, Michael Collins is joined by fellow recording artist pianist Michael McHale and renowned soprano Grace Davidson in a programme comprising Schubert’s The Shepherd on the Rock, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and Schubert’s Octet. The Shepherd on the Rock is a showpiece for clarinet, voice and piano, which conveys the shepherd’s longings for his absent sweetheart. This is followed by one of Mozart’s most sublime works, the Clarinet Quintet. We finish with Schubert’s Octet, an infectiously joyous piece of music that never fails to raise the spirit. Today, also highly regarded as a conductor, Michael Collins continues his distinguished soloist career as a clarinettist. Committed to expanding the repertoire of the instrument, he has premièred works by contemporary composers. Recent releases include a disc of British Clarinet Concertos as soloist and conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. ‘Michael Collins...brilliant playing in every sense’ Classic FM. Grace Davidson has carved an international career working with all the leading Baroque ensembles, including The Sixteen and Tenebrae. ‘Grace Davidson sings with gorgeous purity and warmth and hits some extraordinarily ethereal high notes’ Classic FM. Michael McHale’s international career as a solo recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician has taken him to venues from Japan to the USA and Germany. He released a CD of clarinet sonatas with Michael Collins in 2015. ‘The singing sensibility of McHale’s sensitive and polished pianism’ Gramophone. Supported by Pamela Fulton and Kate Munday.
