Henrietta Barnett in Whitechapel by Micky Watkins
Suburb resident Micky Watkins has written the first ever biography of Henrietta Barnett (1851-1936). Best known as the moving spirit behind the creation of Hampstead Garden Suburb, much less has been written about the first fifty years of her life. Yet, as Micky Watkins shows, the Suburb was only the final achievement of a long and varied career of social reform, much of it spent among the worst slums of London's East End.

A new version of the Suburb design guide produced by the HGS Trust and London Borough of Barnethas been published in 2010. It can be viewed on the HGSTrust website. It contains information ranging from how to make a planning application through to materials that can be used. Please do not rely only on information on this site, always check with Barnet and the Trust before making any plans.
