Burgh House - Constable: 200 Years in Hampstead

FREE ENTRY. John Constable’s love of Hampstead and the Heath is largely overlooked but, as the second centenary of his first visit here approaches, this six month exhibition will redress the balance, thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. We will be showing seven of Constable’s original works on loan from the Victoria and Albert Museum, just steps from the breathtaking views that inspired them. This will be a rare opportunity to see these iconic pieces in their natural home. Heard about our Constable Scramble to riase funds for the House? To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany on 12th March 1938, the London Jewish Cultural Centre will show the exhibition Double Exposure: Jewish Refugees from Austria in Britain. The exhibition, which has already been displayed at the Austrian Cultural Centre London, The Literaturhaus Wien, and Aberystwyth Arts Centre has been curated by Dr Bea Lewkowicz, co-director of the Association for Jewish Refugees (AJR) Refugee Voices Archive and director of Sephardi Voices UK.

Djerba is a unique island, off the Tunisian-Libyan coast, in which 1,200 Jews live in harmony with an Arab-Muslim community of 100,000 for centuries. They speak Hebrew to each other, tune to the Israeli radio every day, have modern Israeli names, and visit relatives in Israel on a regular basis. The community was shaken after the revolution, but despite calls from the Israeli government, only a handful chose to immigrate. Opera Stars in Highgate Covent Garden is coming to Highgate in March when internationally acclaimed opera singer Robert Lloyd and members of The Royal Opera's Jette Parker Young Artists' Programme perform a glittering array of operatic scenes, arias and folk songs from around the world in a fundraising recital for the Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution. Young artists from past concerts in this HLSI series, now in its fifth year, have gone on to star at La Scala and The Royal Opera House, and in other major international productions.
