at St. Jude's Church . See full details...
7.45pm One of Giacomo Puccini's greatest operas,Tosca is a roller-coaster story of love, lust, murder and political intrigue. With its dramatic storyline and Puccini’s richly romantic score, it is one of the world’s best loved operas. This concert performance will be sung in Italian by Nevill Holt Opera, with its orchestra and chorus. The company’s previous productions at Proms in the last three years have all sold out. Under artistic director Nicholas Chalmers, who conducts tonight, Nevill Holt continues to reinforce its national reputation. Nicholas is conductor of Northern Ireland Opera and artistic director of Second Movement Opera Company. ‘The vitality of the playing under Nicholas Chalmers’ firm baton never faulted’ Rupert Christiansen, Daily Telegraph. Tosca is played by Belfast-born soprano Giselle Allen, acknowledged as a singing actress of the first order, who has appeared at opera houses throughout the world. ‘It’s hard to praise Giselle Allen enough’ Opera Now. Spanish tenor Carlos Fidalgo plays Cavaradossi. Born in León, he studied in Europe before moving to London to study at the National Opera Studio. He has sung with UK companies including English National Opera and Scottish Opera, and across Europe. Welsh baritone Paul Carey Jones sings Scarpia. He trained at the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio. Joint winner of the 2013 Wagner Society Singing Competition, he sang with Scottish Opera and Northern Ireland Opera before making his Royal Opera debut last year. 'His unwaveringly steady, oaky baritone anchored the production' Opera Magazine. Supported by Investec. More about the Festival and book tickets online at www.promsatstjudes.org.uk
